Scope & Content This collection is made up of copies used by James Hanlan to illustrate a lecture delivered at the Manchester Historic Association on November 24, 1996, entitled, "Defining the Company Town: Manchester's Working Population from 1840-1860." The copies are primarily excerpts from period newspapers and books (1840s-1860s) and also include a few prints, and tables and statistical data.
Admin/Biographical History James Hanlan is a professor of history, and author of the book, "The Working Population of Manchester, New Hampshire, 1840-1886," UMI Research Press, Ann Arbor, Michigan, 1981. He presented a lecture at the Manchester Historic Association in 1996, based on the research he had done on Manchester and the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company.
