Description |
"Rip Van Winkle on the Mountain". Painted plaster group by John Rogers. Rogers (1829-1904) was a well-known sculptor whose "groups" were popular in the late 19th century. He worked as a mechanic in the machine shop of the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company from 1850 to 1856 and while in Manchester began modeling with clay that he found near the Merrimack River in Hooksett. This group depicts the figure of Rip Van Winkle from the Washington Irving story. In this scene, Rip travels up the mountain where he encounters a gnome-like creature that offers him a drink from a keg that results in a twenty-year sleep. This group was the second in a series of three scenes Rogers created from the Washington Irving story Rip Van Winkle, popular at the time both in literature and theatre. Joseph Jefferson, an actor acclaimed for his portrayal of Rip Van Winkle on stage, posed for all three groups. |
