Description |
"Ha! I Like Not That!" Painted plaster group by John Rogers. Rogers (1829-1904) was a well-known sculptor whose "groups" were popular in the late 19th century. He worked as a mechanic in the machine shop of the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company from 1850 to 1856 and while in Manchester began modeling with clay that he found near the Merrimack River in Hooksett. This group depicts four characters from William Shakespeare's "Othello": Cassio, Othello, Desdemona, and Iago. Cassio had been placed in command, but having disgraced himself, Othello demoted him. Cassio meets with Desdemona, Othello's wife, asking her to intercede for him with Othello. Iago is jealous because Othello secured a prize he wanted. While walking in the garden, Iago and Othello come upon Cassio and Desdemona. As Desdemona hears them approaching, she asks Cassio to stay and meet Othello, and they will urge his suit together, but he declines and takes his leave of her. At this moment, Iago discovers them and excites Othello's suspicions by exclaiming, "Ha! I like not that!" 22" H, 19.5" L, 12" D |
